The Joys of Spring

The sun has finally decided to come out and stay out here in Dulcote with the weather set fair for the next few days.  With all of our bed and breakfast suites and both of our holiday lets full (we are due to welcome our first guests to Park View tomorrow) we are all ready to enjoy this glorious weather.  Temparatures are due to rise to 24 degrees on Sunday – residants of The White House can’t wait!

The White House in Wells: 2 Park View

This weekend we are celebrating the first anniversary of opening The White House bed and breakfast.

We can’t believe this has come around so quickly and we are delighted to use this occasion to announce our new holiday let in the centre of Wells.

2 Park View is in a quiet and peaceful no through road in the centre of Wells and is in the same street as the property we stayed in for two weeks when we first came to live in Somerset.

It’s a beautiful quirky and intimate cottage and ideal to complete our offering to guests.

Mells Daffodil Festival

I was really disappointed to find out I had missed the Mells Daffodil Festival, which was held on Easter Monday.

Mells is a half our drive from The White House and we have been several times to have dinenr at The Talbot, which we can recommend for food, beer and ambiance.

I hadn’t heard of the Festival, which started in 1979 when daffodil bulbs were distributed to the whole of the village to create a dramatic effect.

The event looked fantastic, with food stalls, bands (including the Wurzels!) street stalls and best of all (for those who know me) Morris dancers………

I’ve added the event to my calendar for next year.

Happy Easter!

We were fully booked this Easter here at The White House and while our first guests have now left, we have welcomed more today with further guests arriving tomorrow.

And although the weather has been mixed, everyone was kept happy with a plentiful supply of home made hot cross buns.  Absolutely delicious if I say so myself and will definately bake them again next year!

Happy Easter

Easter is almost upon us and we are expecting our guests to arrive later today and tomorrow.  Amongst them will be our first guests to our new property – School House at Wookey Hole so it is an exciting time for us here at The White House.

Although the weather doesn’t look too good (after a couple of weeks of brilliant sunshine we have the typical bank holiday weather menu of rain…..) there is still lots to do and one of the highlights will be the beginning of the Frome Independent Market  season on Sunday 4th April.

Frome hit the headlines last week in The Times as one of the nicest places to live in England and while I understand why it hit the list, a part of me is wondering if the judges missed Dinder and Dulcote!

Whatever you decide to do over the Easter holidays, enjoy and try not to eat too much chocolate…………………..

Promotion……….

Here at The White House we were pleased to hear that we have been promoted!  No longer will we have to arrive at Pilon Church to practice bell ringing half an hour ahead of the professionals – we are going to join them in the rounds!

Can’t tell you how delighted I am that these lovely poeple think I’m making progress.

And on a similar note, we’ve all penciled in Saturday 18 June 11-13.00 for ringing at The Wwlls Cathedral School Musicircus on Cathedral Green. Although we originally anticipated we would ring the Cathedral Bells at the event, it looks as though we will probably have a mobile set of bells installed on the Green for this as the Cathedral bells themselves are extremely heavy and probably still way beyond us .

So – if you’re around the Green on the day, please say hello

Smallest city in England gets smallest pub!

Wells is famous for being the smallest City in England and now it has its own micro pub to match!

Just Ales has opened on Market Street and is so small there won’t even be a bar.  A selection of beers wine and of course cider will be served to the table and its opening hours will also be micro. “If it’s really busy we may even stay open to 8pm but that’s it”

The White House can’t wait to try it out….

The Great British Design Challenge

Its not often that I blog about the same issue twice in a row but today I am making an exception.  All of us at The White House watched The Great British Design challenge on Tuesday evening and the images of Wells were superb.  The City was really shown off to its best advantage and we were very proud to say we are Wellsonians!

I wasn’t convinced with the final designs.  None of them seemed to fit with the Grade I listed status of the buildings but the owners seemed to like the final result.  Lucy knew a couple of the tenants and has promise dto find out if they have kept the vivd colour schemes!

The Great Interior Design Challenge

Here at The White House we’ve been avidly watching the Great Interior Design Challenge.  And tomorrow evening, it’s the semi-final.

The programme is based on a number of designers working on different types of property and design briefs with one designer being knocked out each episode.

Tomorrow we are left with three designers trying to secure their place in the final and their challenge this time is to each redesign a sitting room on Vicars Close, in Wells.

Vicars Close is the oldest inhabited medieval terrace in the world and is absolutely beautiful.  Its an absolute must see for anyone visiting us, and we’re really looking forward to watching.

If you haven’t yet been to Wells, why not tune in to see what you are missing?

Who will be the next David Beckham?

Our new hobby has hit the headlines this week with both national TV and newspaper coverage:

http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/news/uk/article4693138.ece

Apparently a reclassification of bell ringing is now being considered as a sport but all is not well in the campanology world!

The community is split with some calling for the reclassification while others feel this would spilt bell ringing from its traditional church roots.

I’d be interested in your view but personally I’m all for it.

Will The White House become famous and is Eddie the next David Beckham?
