The Very Best!

We were delighted to receive another great review for The White House yesterday.  And although I don’t usually blog about our reviews, I just couldn’t resist repeating this one.

So this is a huge thank you to all of our lovely guests for your very favourable comments, and it’s an absolute pleasure being able to share The White House with you all

“My friend and I were on a cycling tour and were lucky enough to get a last minute booking at this establishment. I’m not going to bore you with all the details , but suffice to say that I have stayed in many many bed and breakfast places, all over the world, and this is probably the best one I’ve ever stayed at, for numerous reasons!!!

Mary was incredibly welcoming and provided us with everything that we would need, including an amazing breakfast.

If you don’t like it here, then there is something wrong with you !!”

The Joys of Spring

The sun has finally decided to come out and stay out here in Dulcote with the weather set fair for the next few days.  With all of our bed and breakfast suites and both of our holiday lets full (we are due to welcome our first guests to Park View tomorrow) we are all ready to enjoy this glorious weather.  Temparatures are due to rise to 24 degrees on Sunday – residants of The White House can’t wait!

The White House in Wells: 2 Park View

This weekend we are celebrating the first anniversary of opening The White House bed and breakfast.

We can’t believe this has come around so quickly and we are delighted to use this occasion to announce our new holiday let in the centre of Wells.

2 Park View is in a quiet and peaceful no through road in the centre of Wells and is in the same street as the property we stayed in for two weeks when we first came to live in Somerset.

It’s a beautiful quirky and intimate cottage and ideal to complete our offering to guests.

The White House at Wookey

The White House is delighted to launch its new venture, The White House at Wookey. This luxury two bedroom apartment at Wookey Hole complements and extends our existing Bed and Breakfast and self catering offers with a holiday let available for short breaks, weekends and weekly breaks.
The apartment works equally well for families or couples and is perfect for relaxing and as a base for exploring the Somerset landscape.
Please visit our website at http://www.thewhitehousedulcote.co.uk/the-white-house-at-wookey/ to find out more and hopefully we look forward to seeing you soon!

Happy New Year from The White House Bed and Breakfast

The White House would like to wish all of our friends, family and guests a Happy New Year and we hope 2016 is a good one for all of you.  It certainly passed very quickly for us and while the holiday season seemed to be dominated by news of Britain being drenched and battered by storms, here in Somerset we were lucky enough to miss this very bad weather.

And now, while the Christmas Markets have packed up and disappeared, The Somerset Farmers Markets continue and are definitely worth a visit.  There are 16 in total (see www.somersetfarmersmarkets.co.uk for further details of all of them) but those most local to us are:

  • Wells:                every Wednesday 9:30 – 14:30 (15:00 in July and August)
  • Glastonbury:    on the fourth Saturday of the month 9:00 – 14:00
  • Frome:              Cheese and Grain on the second Saturday of the month 9:00 – 13:00
  • Street:               every Thursday 9:30 – 14:30 (15:00 in July and August)

A Very Merry Christmas from The White House Bed and Breakfast

We are just about to sign off until after the Christmas and New Year break and would like to wish all of our friends and the wonderful guests who have stayed with us since our opening in May a very merry Christmas.  The tree is up, the Christmas parties have started, the children are excited, but the nicest thing so far has been our very first visit to a bell ringing tower in Croscombe Church.

Towards the end of November we started, as a family, to attend bell ringing classes, a new after school activity at Wells Cathedral School.  The hobby already has us hooked, although it is much more difficult than you can imagine.  We aren’t yet good enough to be let loose on the bells alone, but yesterday we were invited to watch actual bell ringing in practice at a local Church.  The experience of climbing the very steep and narrow medieval staircase and hearing the bells from inside the tower was exhilarating.  The bells are extremely heavy and everyone worked so hard, so, when you hear those wonderful sounds over Christmas, spare a thought, and maybe a mince pie and something warming, for those wonderful bell ringers!

Scruffy pups…….

IMG_4581IMG_4125

What a difference a day makes – or more accurately a three hour appointment at the Puppy Beauty Parlour…….

Granted Bob has been digging in the vegatable patch in pouring rain in the “before” picture, but he was SOOOO scruffy we were embarrassed to drop him off for his wash and trim.

Anyway, the lady did a great job and he came back looking fantastic!

Wells Carnival

The Carnival is almost on us and we all have our fingers crossed that today’s downpour stop in time!

Taking the children to school this morning the A371 from Wells back up to Dulcote is already closed and the enormous floats are already lined up.  The result was a school traffic jam that emulated Fulham, but the floats look fantastic.

Such a shame that I’ll miss it this year (business trip to Brighton) but I’m sure the rest of The White House will be there to enjoy it.

Wells Carnival

I can’t believe its been a year since we attended our first Carnival and yet the 20th November is now looming large.

For those of you who haven’t yet experienced a Somerset carnival, I would definitely recommend you come along.  It is a huge event with enormous floats (a mix of dancing and tableaux) and interspersed with street performers all winding their way slowly through the medieval streets of Wells.  Costumes are amazing and the amount of effort that goes into each float is unbelievable.  All for charity, make sure you bring along plenty of pennies to throw into the collection vehicles and to find out more and see a video of last year’s carnival, visit http://www.wellssomerset.com/search/entry1045_somerset_carnivals_the_wells_carnival.html

Unfortunately The White House Bed and Breakfast is full for the event but please don’t let that stop you……..

Our swinging sign is finally here!

IMG_2100We have finally managed to find a way around the problems signposting The White House, given that we can’t, due to our listed status, have any decent signage attached to the house.  And so hopefully, our bed and breakfast guests will no longer find it a problem to find us in the dark.

Bob insisted on getting in on the picture, what a poser……..
