Wells Cinema

We finally gave in and went to see Snow White: The Huntsman last night.    We were planning to wait until the open air viewing at Bishops Palace but in the end couldn’t wait.

The film was really good – and we had fun spotting the Wells locations but it seems not to matter what the film, the experience of going to Wells cinema always appeals – such a different experience to major cinema chains in London.

This small independent cinema has great staff – so friendly and helpful; prices are extremely reasonable and you can even buy a drink (including alchol!) to enjoy during the film

Definately worth a visit if you are in the area

What’s on in Wells

There is always so much going on in Wells and the surrounding area that its a major chore to keep The White House Bed and Breakfast website up to date and so I was delighted to receive an email from the Tourist Board with a full list of all local events.

I’ve now added this to our “What’s on Now” page via a live link so take a look I’m sure you’ll find something of interest

Walking in Somerset

We’ve enjoyed some fabulous spring weather here in Dulcote over the past couple of weeks with many of our guests enjoying the Quantocks over the Easter period.  After reading of some great Easter walks in The Times at the weekend, I decided to do a little research and found a great website.  I’ve provided the link below but as well as the levels and the Mendips, there is much more including canal and river walks as well as activitie for those who like a little more strenuous exercise.

Mells Daffodil Festival

I was really disappointed to find out I had missed the Mells Daffodil Festival, which was held on Easter Monday.

Mells is a half our drive from The White House and we have been several times to have dinenr at The Talbot, which we can recommend for food, beer and ambiance.

I hadn’t heard of the Festival, which started in 1979 when daffodil bulbs were distributed to the whole of the village to create a dramatic effect.

The event looked fantastic, with food stalls, bands (including the Wurzels!) street stalls and best of all (for those who know me) Morris dancers………

I’ve added the event to my calendar for next year.

Happy Easter!

We were fully booked this Easter here at The White House and while our first guests have now left, we have welcomed more today with further guests arriving tomorrow.

And although the weather has been mixed, everyone was kept happy with a plentiful supply of home made hot cross buns.  Absolutely delicious if I say so myself and will definately bake them again next year!

Happy Easter

Easter is almost upon us and we are expecting our guests to arrive later today and tomorrow.  Amongst them will be our first guests to our new property – School House at Wookey Hole so it is an exciting time for us here at The White House.

Although the weather doesn’t look too good (after a couple of weeks of brilliant sunshine we have the typical bank holiday weather menu of rain…..) there is still lots to do and one of the highlights will be the beginning of the Frome Independent Market  season on Sunday 4th April.

Frome hit the headlines last week in The Times as one of the nicest places to live in England and while I understand why it hit the list, a part of me is wondering if the judges missed Dinder and Dulcote!

Whatever you decide to do over the Easter holidays, enjoy and try not to eat too much chocolate…………………..

Promotion……….

Here at The White House we were pleased to hear that we have been promoted!  No longer will we have to arrive at Pilon Church to practice bell ringing half an hour ahead of the professionals – we are going to join them in the rounds!

Can’t tell you how delighted I am that these lovely poeple think I’m making progress.

And on a similar note, we’ve all penciled in Saturday 18 June 11-13.00 for ringing at The Wwlls Cathedral School Musicircus on Cathedral Green. Although we originally anticipated we would ring the Cathedral Bells at the event, it looks as though we will probably have a mobile set of bells installed on the Green for this as the Cathedral bells themselves are extremely heavy and probably still way beyond us .

So – if you’re around the Green on the day, please say hello

Wooly Jumpers!

Now that we are coming to the end of our second year of living in Somerset, I keep thinking I’ve seen it all.  Well, yesterday I had to think again.

Queuing at the bank I was surprised to see a guy carrying a dog – and I noticed this as I know that no dogs are allowed (I can never bring Bob into town if I need to pop into the bank).  Imagine my surprise when his business was completed and he put his dog down.  Turned out to be a lamb on a lead!

Stunned, I didn’t think to take a picture but we met again in the market and he very kindly allowed me to take a couple of snaps.

The gorgeous little wooly jumper was very tame and her owner shared that lambs are remarkably easy to train and very loving.  He threw in another snippet of information – that he also has a pet goat that sits on his knee when he is driving!

Spring is here and another cycle begins

We had such a lovely weekend at The White House after what originally looked to be a bit of a disappointment.  Original plans to visit our friends in London and see the Rugby were dashed at the last minute as our friend was ill in bed with a very high temperature.  Luckily all worked out ok and Miranda is now, thankfully, on the mend.

The sun was shining and we spent the weekend with our older daughter, Melanie, who had agreed to house sit for us while we were away.  Our bed and breakfast guests were particularly lovely and on Saturday afternoon, after a trip to Wells marketplace, we all started the transformation of our kitchen garden into a nicer looking area.

Photos below and I’ll post more as the transformation continues….
