Smallest city in England gets smallest pub!

Wells is famous for being the smallest City in England and now it has its own micro pub to match!

Just Ales has opened on Market Street and is so small there won’t even be a bar.  A selection of beers wine and of course cider will be served to the table and its opening hours will also be micro. “If it’s really busy we may even stay open to 8pm but that’s it”

The White House can’t wait to try it out….

The Great British Design Challenge

Its not often that I blog about the same issue twice in a row but today I am making an exception.  All of us at The White House watched The Great British Design challenge on Tuesday evening and the images of Wells were superb.  The City was really shown off to its best advantage and we were very proud to say we are Wellsonians!

I wasn’t convinced with the final designs.  None of them seemed to fit with the Grade I listed status of the buildings but the owners seemed to like the final result.  Lucy knew a couple of the tenants and has promise dto find out if they have kept the vivd colour schemes!

The Great Interior Design Challenge

Here at The White House we’ve been avidly watching the Great Interior Design Challenge.  And tomorrow evening, it’s the semi-final.

The programme is based on a number of designers working on different types of property and design briefs with one designer being knocked out each episode.

Tomorrow we are left with three designers trying to secure their place in the final and their challenge this time is to each redesign a sitting room on Vicars Close, in Wells.

Vicars Close is the oldest inhabited medieval terrace in the world and is absolutely beautiful.  Its an absolute must see for anyone visiting us, and we’re really looking forward to watching.

If you haven’t yet been to Wells, why not tune in to see what you are missing?

Jamie’s stall on Market Street

Those of you who have visited The White House may have noticed when wandering arounnd Wells, a fantastic fruit and vegetable stall located just opposite Sew Vintage.  The site of the stall is a small quirky courtyard just outside the main shopping area in Wells.

Many times I’ve walked just that extra bit further and braved the very long queues to get my fruit and vegetables from the stall due to the high quality of their produce, and those guests staying for breakfast as well as accommodation have always been extremely complimentary about the quality of the produce I serve up to them.

Well, I am very sorry to hear that the owner is moving to Street and so this little gem of a find will have to be replaced.  A big thank you to the owners and I hope the good people of Street appreciate them as much as we have done!

Who will be the next David Beckham?

Our new hobby has hit the headlines this week with both national TV and newspaper coverage:

http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/news/uk/article4693138.ece

Apparently a reclassification of bell ringing is now being considered as a sport but all is not well in the campanology world!

The community is split with some calling for the reclassification while others feel this would spilt bell ringing from its traditional church roots.

I’d be interested in your view but personally I’m all for it.

Will The White House become famous and is Eddie the next David Beckham?

The White House at Wookey

The White House is delighted to launch its new venture, The White House at Wookey. This luxury two bedroom apartment at Wookey Hole complements and extends our existing Bed and Breakfast and self catering offers with a holiday let available for short breaks, weekends and weekly breaks.
The apartment works equally well for families or couples and is perfect for relaxing and as a base for exploring the Somerset landscape.
Please visit our website at http://www.thewhitehousedulcote.co.uk/the-white-house-at-wookey/ to find out more and hopefully we look forward to seeing you soon!

Wassail Celebrations

Annual Wassail celebrations took place in Somerset last week with the nearest to Dulcote being held in Godney.

Tradition demands that a shotgun is fired into the oldest tree in the orchard to ward off evil spirits accompanied by song and all present drink, of course, hot mulled cider, all taking place under the watchful eye of the Green Man

Hopefully we will have another good harvest in 2016

Simple Pleasures

At the most unexpected moments, I am reminded of the sheer joy of living in Dulcote and the quality of life we are enjoying in comparison to City living.

Late last night as I was walking Bob, our (now not so small) puppy I looked up and was completely overwhelmed by the beauty of the night sky.

Passers by must have thought me just a little bit strange as I stopped and switched off my torch to stare at the cloudless sky filled with stars, and my husband and son certainly thought I had completely flipped when I returned home to demand they join me in the garden to admire the view.

With absolutely no light pollution (the upside of living in a village where street lamps are dim, as well as few and far between) the view was amazing.

Sometimes it’s the most simple things that make you realise just how lucky you are

Wells Film Festival

We all know that Wells is a favorite location for Hollywood film makers and this year, the City is to host its very first film festival.

The event will take place between 21st and 24th April, with a focus on those films which have scenes in and around Wells.

An outdoor screening of the sequal to Snowhite and the Huntsman (The Huntsman: Winter’s War) kicks is an obvious inclusion and here at The White House we are still waiting for further details of the festival, which will be released soon.  Watch this space……………………..

The Bath Literary Festival begins on the 26th of this month and goes right through to the 6th March.  Looking at the website, there’s a great line-up of authors participating; there’s something for everyone; and Bath is a great place to visit so I’d definately recommend putting the date in your diary.

Bath is so close to Wells, why not treat yourself to a special weekend with Bed and Breakfast at The White House and visit these two fabulous City’s.
