Hot Fuzz – 10th Anniversary Screenings at The Bishop’s Palace and Gardens

At the weekend, The Bishop’s Palace hosted an outdoor screening of Hot Fuzz.  We weren’t lucky enough to get tickets for the event, and looks like we missed a treat.

Simon Pegg was spotted in a local coffee shop, with Edgar Wright apparantly in attendance (hearsay only….) Wells was full of fans in fancy dress and a great night was had by all.

Such a shame we didn’t get there……

Coming to life…..

The weather continues to be warm, dry and sunny here in Dulcote and the garden is springing to life.  There is still no sign of rain and our local farmers are beginning to talk about drought.

Our son, Edward, is taking a real interest in photography and took some superb images of the garden over the weekend. Everything is not oly springing to lfe but we seem to be a month ahead of last year in terms of blossom and flowers. Hope you enjoy.

Balloons

How many of you have had an opportunity to take a ride in a hot air balloon?

I was lucky enough to experience this a good few years ago in The Lake District and I will never forget the peace and tranquility, with the only sound being the woosh of the fire keeping the air hot in the balloon.  I remember that I tried a number of times and was on the verge of giving up as The Lake District was a very long drive from my home in County Durham, and the ride could never be guaranteed as it is heavily reliant on the weather and a completely calm day.  I think it was my fourth attempt before I finally got up there.

It was definately worth the effort and was an experience I will never forget.

The weather here in Dulcote has been ideal for balloon rides throughout the whole of April – we have had no rain (beginning to think we can class April as drought), brilliant sunshine, warm temperatures in the main, and wind free days.  So I wasn’t surprised to see a hot air balloon above The White House.

Photos arent great, but it brought back good memories….

And so it starts again……

Had a great time in the garden at the weekend – learning from last year, Lucy and I made up strong, tall supports for the beans, peas and sweet peas while Rod went down to the market place to buy plug plants.

We are now the proud owners of this years first batch of peas, broad beans, sweet peas and onions and I’ll be down to the market again on Wednesay to add more to the collection.

At the moment we are having to speand a lot of time watering the garden as we haven’t had rain in such a long time.  With rain forecast later this week we are hoping that the mix of warm sunshine will help to produce a strong crop

Easter in Dulcote

It’s been a jam packed Easter weekend here at The White House with a full house in all of our Annexes as well as lots of visits from friends.

Three seperate  visits from friends in London has kept us busy over the past week and its been so good to see everyone again after so long – Spring is a time for renewal and to renew old friendships has been particularly satisfying.

One of the things we always do when we have friends with us is to walk down to Wells across Bishops Fields.  Only a 20 minute walk along a paved pathway, when the sun is shining, the views are spectaculat, with the Cathedral coming up at you on the right while Glastonbury Tor stands proud to your left.

And the added bonus this time were the tiny ducklings.  Newborn and trying to waddle behind their proud parents, they were a joy to behold

Clifton Wine School

As a Christmas gift this year our daughter Melanie bought us a voucher for wine tasting at Clifton Wine School.  It was a generous gift and the voucher actually covered the cost of two wine tasting evenings.

The first was in Bath and we spent a lovely evening in March tasting sparkling and desert wines.  The second was last night, in Bristol, this time focusing on wine and cheese combinations.

She knows us well……

But more seriously, it was a fun night that also taught us a lot about how to evaluate wine professionally.  Delivered in an unpretentious way, and with lots of  engagement from those attending, we learned how to identify a young and old wine; how best to enjoy the bouquet and also how to taste it.

So for all of you thinking about your plans to fill time while visiting The Whtet House, why not consider including this in your itinerary

You can find details at http://www.cliftonwineschool.com/

And if you do decide to go, then cheers, and enjoy!

Spring has most definately arrived!

Spring has most definately arrived in Dulcote.  We had a wonderful weekend complete with warm sunshine that wouldn’t have been out of place in August.

We decided to spend Sunday afternoon on Glastonbury Tor and took friends and a picnic with us.   The  views were fantastic with clear blue skies all day but the very nicest part of the day were the lambs.  Not quite newborn, and just getting springy.

It really is the nicest part of the year

Spring Update

It has been a beautiful weekend here in Dulcote and our guests have enjoyed wonderful walks over Bishops Fields into Wells.

Reviews for the Fountain Inn continue to be superb, and this is definately back at the top of our list when we recommend places to eat for our guests.

Our garden is beginning to spring to life – leaving the house on Saturday morning we had one fully formed blossom on our cherry tree and when we returned late afternoon, the majority of the tree was in bloom.

But most stunning in my mind, were the tulips, which are now coming out in force

With the weather set fair for the remainder of this week and into next weekend, I’m looking forward to continuing to watch the soil for signs of life and beginning to plan our vegetable garden

British Summertime

We have had beautiful weather here in Dulcoe over the weekend and at last we have finally reached that time of year when the clocks go forward.

I was just a little too late to capture the colours last night but this picture was taken at 8pm.

Roll on summertime!
